I Ask Thee

11Dec06

It’s 2:11 AM in Amman and I’m still awake (naturally). I can’t help but ask myself questions that nothing but headache results from trying to answer them. For example, why on earth did I start a masters program? So what if I like marketing? Was that enough reason to go back to school? And have to read text books again? I am an impatient person who can not no matter what spend more than 45 mins MAX reading a text book, only 45 mins in a day, and I can never study earlier than two days before an exam. You do the math, and try to imagine my frustration two days before any midterm exam. I feel like my brains will explode and make a huge mess.

They write text books for commercial reasons I’m sure; with all due respect to university professors, you can’t ramble like a story-writer in a text book about International Marketing! It’s not a novel! Have mercy on people with short attention span who probably suffer from ADD gone undiagnosed and stop repeating yourself in every damn chapter because they all sound the same to me, you go on an on about cultures and then you repeat everything in the next chapter about management styles, and then you mention the same exact things in a chapter about global marketing. And then you elaborate more in the rest of the chapters. I’m sorry but it’s stupid and I hate you! There are other ways to make money writing books by which readers do NOT die from boredom or lose hair trying to figure where does a thought end and a new one starts.

Another question is, what is so God damn complicated about installing a damned DSL line?! I pay every month more than 100 JD on a dial up line that is so slow I do in an hour what I do in 15 mins using a DSL’s. And I can’t do much with it even if I wanted to. I can’t update my blog’s layout properly, I can’t chat with anyone, I can’t read as much as I used to, I can’t post as much…it takes forever to check my email. What puzzles me, is that installing a DSL line pays off in the long run, the dorm can make substantial profits out of such things, so its good for them and good for me.

My existential questions are never ending, but one that I dwell on, is why are some people so annoying? And how come they are still as annoying even though they can tell that people around them are not at ease with them?

    Interesting questions,
Have you thought of the using a highlighter or a way to summarize your text book into “to-the-point” few short sentences? That helps
But, I thought Masters programs are really NOT for people with short attention spans. And trust me, You don’t suffer from ADD.

Many of the Dorms in the US have Ethernet connections to the Internet, Yes, 100MB/s or even 1GB/s and you’re absolutely correct on the financial advantage they would receive. I guess your international Marketing degree is coming to help her. Or you’re just smart to figure it out without a masters :). But actually a good alternative, is to go to one of the cafes with your laptop and just finish everything you want there using their much faster connection. Might come at a price though. But it is worth it. I do it all the time

Finally, annoying people don’t come in one size “annoys” all. What you might find annoying might be hilarious to someone else. Someone that is universally annoying is probably not existent. Yet, that’s another mystery in this world …

All the best, you seriously deserve to get what ever you hope for

Easy Shaden… try to look at the bright side. What if you weren’t admitted to uni to continue your study? you got a great chance! Forget about text box and professors, this is a visa to life, you do your best to coem out with the best of it… There are no shortcuts to any place worth going, if it’s good it’s got to be hard! But you’re right, the educational system in Jordan needs a total reform

I somewhat second that…. Grad school is something we choose to go back to…and if we don’t enjoy it, then we’re probably in the wrong place!

Good luck on your exam, shaden!

I wasn’t exactly angry as much as frustrated. I don’t regret pursuing my studies, that wasn’t what I intended to say. I’m saying, professors should stop mass-writing books for the sake of money instead of conveying a noble message.

I’ve just remembered something funny. We were assigned a book about Integrated Marketing Communication, and in the first midterm, one of the 3 questions we had to answer was: Explore the IMC process. I couldn’t help but giggle after reading it, because the answer if not the entire book then at least the first 5 chapters . I’m sure that this is not the best way to learn, that’s what I’m saying. I always hated the way we were taught in grade school and in college, and unfortunately things don’t seem to get any better in higher studies.

I think I’ll write more about it when I have time.

Thank you all for your comments.

Hi Shaden, a little late but just to let you know I’m thinking of you and praying for you. Be encouraged…I won’t get to finish my BA until my hubby gets his MA and all the little Kinzes get their degrees paid for…I may DIE a college drop-out!

Hwaweeeha… We are done with Finals here… good luck in midterms. For the matter of textbooks, I was really considering to do MBA after my engineering undergrad study, but one time I picked a business book and start reading! I only read 2/3 of a page and then throw the book away!… I cannot focus on reading a page that has no equations! so be it, no MBA and let’s stick with Engineering… at least textbooks are not that boring.
