Stereotyped Jobs

20Dec06

It amazes me that women at least over here (the Arabic part of the world) still suffer from discrimination in job opportunities and recruitment. I understand how traditions play a role in our lives but I always thought it’s about time we see women as hardware support technicians, software support persons where the work is mostly outdoors, network engineers, civil engineers…etc but I think I was wrong, that just won’t happen, at least not in a hundred years. It’s a lot more complicated than I thought. For such a change to occur the minds involved need to be changed.

I wonder what’s wrong with a woman as a sales person, or a woman installing software programs in bakeries or factories and then training users and give support. I understand the awkwardness, and the uneasiness resulted from women being unexpected at such places but am I the only one who thinks women should be encouraged instead of put down? Perusing such jobs will help change how societies perceive women and how women see themselves. It’s sad that we still live in societies where being a female engineer in any field, for example, is punished by unemployment (and the occasional scornful look).
