How Machiavellian are You?

07May08

The following are merely thoughts. A monologue that is not ended yet. Feel free to share your thoughts.
No matter what you say, you probably know that you’re Machiavellian in your own way.

If you’re a father, you’ve probably done something cruel once to protect your son or daughter. And who among us have not lied sometimes to protect a loved one or for a “greater good” that can not be achieved through good deeds.

Evil could be very subjective. And subjectiveness is dangerous when the individual’s ego is the size of Antarctica and he/she believes their own perception of the situation, their version of the story and have their own reality. Not to say that such people with such ego are wrong by the way, but it’s just that they mentally annihilate the rest of the world and assume that there’s only one version of the truth and that version is the one they own while in fact, everyone of us has a distinctive lookout on life and everyone of us has a share in the ultimate truth.

But really how evil is evil? is it evil to do whatever it takes to stop your daughter from seeing that loser she’s been seeing? you’d do anything, lie to her, spy on her just to make sure she’s safe with him, maybe kick her out of the house if that’s what it takes! would beat her? because some would. A while back in the news, a father killed his daughter because she wanted to marry a man from a different religion. Or would you lock her up until she gets back to her senses?

When is it OK to act evil? and if you do act bad or evil, do you become bad or evil? normally people would say that only when a behavior becomes a pattern that you would be able to describe a person by it. But if you kill, you’re a killer and if you steal you’re a thief so long as people know about it. I think that’s the point, we all do things that we wouldn’t normally do if we knew we’d get busted. Even if no one gives a damn, we still feel bad if people or some of them knew.

You’re more Machiavellian than others if you don’t feel ashamed when exposed even when you know you’ve done something evil in itself, you believe that it was for a greater good. How great is probably not important; as long as it’s GREATER than the good you’d do otherwise. Of course the source of your judgment is always internal and the basis is always the best of your knowledge. And God knows you’re ready to defend what you’ve done once your secret is out, coldly and arrogantly because you don’t expect anyone to understand.

Evil is probably intriguing because it’s powerful and more importantly raw. Think of what you need/needed to be good, or act good, it’s more difficult for some than others to be good that’s for sure. But to be evil, or do evil, it doesn’t take much really. You just need to feel evil and the rest is easy.

Hitler is not glorified for his massacres, but lets be honest, it’s his madness that made him known. It made him interesting, and although hated world wide, we’ll continue to discuss him and his inhumanity to the end of dawn. But even you, someone who’s normal and not completely evil can feel powerful and important when you’re evil doing is exposed and people start wondering what kind of people are you, why did you do what you’ve done and how could you.

Powerful people show no remorse for whatever evil they’ve inflicted on others. They have nothing to apologize for, for they know why they’ve done it, and they believe the result was worth it.

Think Palestinian “suicide bombers” / martyrs, George W. Bush, Hitler, Assassinations…etc. What do you think?
