Smile, You’re in South Lebanon

12Jun08

“Smile, you’re in south Lebanon” is a great documentary I was lucky enough to watch last week in Souk Jara. The 1 hour and 20 something minutes documentary by a brilliant Dalia Kury filmed the life of a southern Lebanese family and how they deal with fear and hardship.

The answer to the previous question is in the title, they smile!

I don’t want to spoil it so I’m just going to say that they were the most adorable, cheerful, courageous and dignified people you could find who live in a war zone. Each one of them had this amazing smile upon his face even while recalling painful accounts of Israeli cruelty and injustice, or discussing the unknown future of their baby girl.

I just can’t help but admire their strength and love for life.

The documentary certainly makes you think. If you’re into politics, to you, this film is probably yet another documentary about south Lebanon and the war with Israel, but I encourage everyone to watch it because it’s not about politics, it’s about dignified resistance and holding on to your land and your life with a big smile on your face!

I also recommend it for whiny people who don’t need a reason to sulk.

    Hi shaden
lovely to read what you wrote here. its such a shame you had to watch it at the most horrible venue, souk jara, the sound and picture were soooo sad. Thank you anyway for sharing your thoughts.
