A handyman is someone who gets paid to do various household chores and repairs. The range of skills a handyman has varies greatly from person to person. A handyman can do odd jobs such as lawn work or raking leaves. They can also do minor home repair or improvements such as painting. The search for the right handyman starts with you.

Decide what needs to be done and make a detailed list. Do not expect every handyman to have all the skills necessary to do everything around the house. Handymen are typically used for smaller projects or one-time jobs. Handymen with a wide range of skills are typically more expensive and you might be able to save money by finding one who specializes in just your particular needs. If you simply need someone to paint a room, hiring a professional who has woodworking skills and electrical knowledge might prove to be more costly. If you have a laundry list of items that need work however, choosing one who has a range of skills well suited to your list may save time and money. Ask detailed questions about their experience.

Getting references is important. There are many stories of disastrous labor experiences from shoddy work to outright theft. Ensuring your handyman is trustworthy and well respected is essential in ensuring a good job. The best way to find a quality worker is by referral. Many handymen stay busy simply on word of mouth referrals from happy customers. Talk to neighbors, family, and friends to see if they have had positive experiences.

Get a written estimate that includes the price and time for completion. Unscrupulous handymen may give a verbal estimate and when it s time to pay come up with a list of things that raised the price higher than expected. Know up- front what the work will cost be and any variables that may affect a change.

Get a contract in writing. This will protect you if anything goes wrong. A handyman who is willing to put it in writing is typically more trustworthy also. If they aren t willing to do this, they are not the person to be trusted with your job. Check to see if they have valid liability insurance and get proof. Although you may opt to forego this for smaller jobs, there can be damage if things go awry and you want to be covered.

Hiring a handyman can be very useful in getting a lot of smaller tasks accomplished. They can also be a much more affordable option then hiring a licensed contractor. Check references and skill levels before making a final decision and be sure you are comfortable with the person. Remember that this person will have access to your home so you want to feel secure in your choice.

An area rug is one of those items that can be more then a little difficult to define. How big are they? Where in your home do they go exactly? Let’s first take a look inside what is generally the largest room in the house: the living room.

Often times, your living room will be large enough that it may need something to “break it up” a little bit. A good way to do this is to find an area rug with a color that contrasts the color of your living room carpet (or floor). This often has the result of setting off the open area and tkaing the focus off of the vastness of the room.

Area rugs are also a great option for a home with hardwood floors. Not only can they help your home from an aesthetic viewpoint, they can also make the house feel warmer (both literally and emotionally) and can reduce echoing in smaller rooms. A good quality rug with an anti-skid backing will also make your home safer – less slippage on those hardwood or Pergo floors!

Bathrooms might be where the area rug reigns supreme. With most bathrooms being covered in cold tile or linoleum, these small rugs are the perfect compliment to this small area. Best of all they are inexpensive enough, that they can easily be replaced with something completely different if they wear out, or even if you just get bored with a particular style or color.

If you are not a homeowner, and are currently renting, area rugs are a fantastic way to personalize your living space without jeopardizing your security deposit, or other cleaning fees after you leave. And when you do leave, you get to take your rugs with you to your next home!

Whether you are renting, or own your home, there is no denying the benefits of using area rugs in a child’s room. At 1/10th the cost of the carpet in the room, you can often prevent juices, crayons, and other hazards from ever reaching the far more expensive carpeting.

Perhaps the greatest strength of the area rug lies in the ambiguity of its description. As the “jack of all trades” rug, you can find a near limitless number of sizes, colors, materials, textures and more to choose from. There is something out there for every room in your home – no matter what the design, colors, or theme is in each.

DDW Your Guide to Bathroom Planning and Design

Word Count:
702

For the best Tarmac Waterford company, call Davitt Driveways Waterford.

The best way to begin developing a bathroom plan is to clarify what you want and need. As you are deciding what features your bathroom should include, focus on the specific needs and preferences of the people who will use it. Buyer s guides for bathroom furniture are now available in Spacify.

Bathroom Design Ideas, Contemporary Bathroom Vanities, Bathroom Wall Mirrors, Contemporary Bathroom Furniture, Modern Bathroom Faucet.

To find the best Tarmac Waterford company, click here for Davitt Driveways Waterford.
This bathroom planning guide aims at providing you with bathroom design ideas useful in planning a bath space, dressing area or cloakroom. You may be planning a revamp of your old bathroom or doing it from scratch, these are some basic points you may like to ponder upon. Let s start with the basic questions,

i) What is the area of the bathroom?
ii) Who will use it? Children, guests, you, two people or the whole family?
iii) What are the fixtures you would like to install?
(Shower cubicle, jets, tub, vanity etc)
iv) Which parts of the bathroom you plan to revamp?
v) Is the lighting appropriate?
vi) What bathroom furniture you would like to buy?
vii) Does it require plumbing work?

Start with first things first. Measure up the bathroom area and make a rough sketch with the fixtures you have, you wish to change, and even fix in case it s a new bathroom. This will help you estimate the exact area you have around to play with. Next thing should fall in place with a realistic budget. Even if you are thinking of redoing the plumbing job, estimate the costs, for it can be expensive. With the budgets and fixtures you want in hand, it would be easy to dwell on ideas and new fittings. It could be a vanity, shower enclosure or a new tub; make sure you think of the space. It s important to move around too, and you don t want to clutter your bathroom.

Modular bathrooms done in little space are in vogue. There are more people looking for smaller bathrooms fitted with modern amenities. With meticulous and creative thinking, you should be able to fit in the things you desire, say a shower cubicle, for instance.

You get corner shower cubicles that save space and if there is space constraint, you could always use a separate overhead shower cubicle and use curtains to keep away the water splashing.

Tubs come in different shapes too and save your bathroom precious space. Get a deeper bathtub that saves space around the foot-end or baths where you sit straight, saving on the length. For bigger bathrooms, when you have good space on hand, you can play with the space with fewer constraints. Estimate the space, the gadgets and fixtures you plan to add. The saunas, shower cubicles and tubs are all possible, just work on it in a way that helps the space look open. Just let your creativity speak in your planning and design!

Bathroom fittings

To avoid any ghastly sites in the bathroom, you may need to pay attention to bathroom fittings. Detailed work and fittings like faucets and sinks can matter in fashioning your desired space,

Faucets
Modern bathroom Faucet may sound like the simplest thing to choose, but pay attention to details like mounting (wall/sink) and material. If you already have a faucet, maybe you plan to change the mounting, which can cost much more as it may also requires plumbing work.

Toilet Seats
Toilet seats come in different shapes and sizes. Depending on the available space, you can round up from a choice of elongated, rounded or corner seats. The elongated seat is great for comfort, but pay attention to details and dimensions. You don t want your hands touching the ground when seated. Also, for smaller bathrooms, you can get one of those corner seats that save space.

Sinks & Taps
Sinks come in sundry shapes, colors and sizes too. The designer variety includes wall-mounted, counter sinks in steel, glass, ceramic and a combination of accessories and colors to match. Taps are functional things and you would like to consider the water flow and temperature control system before you buy. There are designer taps you get that is the perfect
combination of style and function.

Contemporary bathroom furniture
Be it a bathroom or cloakroom, contemporary bathroom vanities deserve great scores on utility and function. Work on the storage room and sink shape and size very closely. You get sinks in all shapes and sizes for both big and small bathrooms and in materials from fancy wood to steel and glass, so find something that goes with your bathroom theme.

How do you repair a gas stove when it breaks down in the middle of a dish you are whipping up? Or even before you’ve set that pot atop the burner? Can you determine beforehand if your gas stove has a problem and if that problem is within your (or will require) expert attention?

Compared to electric stoves, most problems with gas stoves are simple, mechanical and may be resolved with a few troubleshooting measures that you can do yourself. To repair a gas stove in your kitchen, you need only keen observation and common sense. Do-it-yourself, self-help, usually works, unless of course if at any time you smell gas, suspect a gas leak, and cannot identify where the leak is coming from. This is the time to get expert help.

On your own, here are a few tips to repair a gas stove:

What do you do when you have clogged burners? Your gas stove’s burners have portholes around them through which gas is released and gets to the spark made by the igniter to light a controlled flame. Sometimes you will wonder why your burners are not lighting up even after several tries on your dial. Check out the burner portholes; they may be clogged so that gas cannot escape to reach the igniter. You can remove the burner top and grate, get the burner assembly with the portholes out, and check the clogs. In this case, you need only to clean those portholes, but do it by picking on each porthole with a toothpick or pin, making sure the hole is cleared but not deformed by your picking, brushing the holes to remove any leftover or residue, and then washing or brushing the burner completely. If this does not do it, get expert repair help already.

Can you adjust the flame setting or flame size? Ideally, you should see your stove’s flame as bright blue in color and consistently burning. The blue color is the result of the proper mixture of the gas fuel and the surrounding air that assures you that the fuel is being burned efficiently. If the flame is of a yellowish or whitish color, there may be a problem with how the gas ignition is aerated or how air is mixing with the gas fuel. You not only get sooty pans this way; you also run the risk of gas being overly fed into the burner. To adjust the air and gas mixture to the safest and most efficient level, you can adjust the stove’s pilot which is a screw valve located behind the control knobs. With a screwdriver, you can turn and adjust this pilot until you get a bluish flame to indicate you’ve reached the efficient air-gas mixture level.

Sometimes after cleaning and adjusting the pilot, you still cannot get an instant flame on your burners. You can also check the ignition this time. The spark ignition that is connected to your stove’s control knob lights up the mixed gas and air to ignite a flame. The igniter is located either on the left or right side very near the burner. Examine the igniter and check for clogs or severed wire or damaged spark mechanism. Brush it to clean the clogs and reveal any damaged mechanism, which if there are any, can be bought and replaced easily. Some gas stove models use electronic igniters which over time also turn defective due to normal wear or tear. If so, then it may be time to replace the electronic igniter, too. Also, you can check if there is any cut wiring or exposed insulation in your electronic igniter; the module may be grounded and is not working properly.

When you smell gas and trace it to your gas safety valve, check out the valve for integrity as in there are no loose hose clamps or faulty valve gates. If after tightening these clamps and valves there is still a trace of gas odor, take your appliance to a competent repairman.

There may also be times you are pushed to panic levels when your stove emits more smoke than it used to. Before you panic, check your stove first for drip-buildup. Sometimes fat and grease drip and are accumulated on the burners and the burner drip pans. When touched by flame and burned, these drips create much smoke. You can simply remove those drip pans and clean away the drip-down grease, washing and drying those drip pans totally before your next use.

These are just some basic tips on how to repair a gas stove. However, for problems that you cannot accurately pinpoint, it is always best to let the experts handle it. Take your gas stove to the nearest repair shop when in doubt.

Learn how to remove an old wood double hung window and install a vinyl replacement window.

Last week I told you how to measure your wood window openings to properly order your new vinyl replacement windows. This week I’m going to explain how to remove your old windows. The vast majority of wood sash double hung windows in America have the same specifications. Starting from inside the house and working out, you have a wood stop approximately 3/8″ X 3/8″. Then comes the lower sash (the sash is the piece of glass and surrounding wood frame). Then you have another wood stop (called a parting bead) between the lower sash and upper sash. This stop is approx. 1/4″ X 1/2″. Then you have the upper sash, and finally, the outside wood stop (called a blind stop) that is approx. 1/2″ X 3/4″.

Before beginning, be sure to wear safety glasses and gloves. The safety glasses will protect your eyes from debris, and the gloves help avoid splinters. The inside stop needs to be removed first. Try not to damage these, they will be re-installed after the replacement windows are put in. If you should happen to crack the old stops, you can take a piece to a hardware store or molding store to get replacement wood stops. If the stops have been painted to blend into the surrounding trim or wall, you need to put a flat screwdriver or putty knife into the indented area that separates the stop from the surrounding area. Drag the blade from top to bottom to chip away the paint. Then put a stiff blade putty knife into this seam and pry the stop away from the frame. Start in the middle of the stop where there is the most flexibility. Work the putty knife from the middle to the top, then from the middle to the bottom. The number of nails that were used to install the stop will determine how difficult removal will be. I have seen some stops that have just 3 nails, while others have had 6. Most of the time there will be stops around all four sides of the opening, but I have seen some openings that didn’t have a top stop, and others that had no bottom stop.

After the inside stops have been removed, you should be able to pull the lower sash out. If the windows were painted shut at some time, you might have to pry the area where the lock is located to separate the sashes. Now, once you get the lower sash out, it will still be attached to the cords that hold the window up when you raise it. Take a pair of tin snips and cut the cords while maintaining tension on them. The cords will recoil back into the assemblies. Take the lower sash and set it aside.

Next,we need to remove the middle stop, or parting bead. This piece is going to be thrown away, so you don’t have to be careful when removing this piece. The parting bead will be on top and along both sides. It’s never on the bottom. Take a screwdriver and tPDD1 it into the groove between the side frame and parting bead. Pry out. The bead is nailed into a recessed groove. When all of the parting bead is out, the upper sash will come out. If it’s painted to the outside stop, CAREFULLY pry the sash from the outside stop with a stiff putty knife. You want to avoid damaging the outside stop. Remove the upper sash the same way you did the lower sash, cutting the cords under tension.

At this point, you should have the inside stops removed and set aside to be installed later, both sashes removed, the middle stop or parting bead removed and discarded, and the outside blind stop left in place undisturbed. Check to make sure there are no obstructions in the opening such as nails, the metal tab at the bottom for holding in the old screen, etc. The final step is to take a stiff putty knife and scrape the inside face of the outside blind stops to get rid of any old caulking. This is the surface that the replacement windows are going to rest against, and we are going to want this area as smooth as possible. Clean up all loose debris from the opening, and you are now ready to install your replacement windows. That will be our topic for next weeks article.

This article and others that follow will be devoted to home repair and improvement dealing with different areas from roof to basement.

If you are going to re-do the bathroom floor – this means taking up your tile, sheet vinyl, or ceramic tile and underlayments you should make sure there are no signs of water damage to the subflooring and check to see if it is solid throughout. When laying down a new floor the main question is always can I lay tile over the existing floor or do I have to pick up the old one first? If the floor is level and sound you can usually just tile right over it with plastic or vinyl flooring, but keep in mind how much room you have for the bathroom door, door frame and wall molding (if any) you may have to open or close the door from time to time!

If the underlayment is solid but not quit level you can use leveling embossers (like mortar) to fill-in low spots to make a level surface, otherwise place a new underlayment over it, if you can. I have seen home owners doctor it up with thin plain wood strips don t do it! All materials must be water and moisture resistant as possible. Always use at least a 3ft level to insure surface is not slanted in any way.

For a typical ground level home like a ranch with no basement, floor foundations are ‘framed’, meaning the floor sits on joists with 2-by’s (stills) running perpendicular to the joists along the foundation. ‘Girders’, (metal rods) at or near the center of the joists help in support. Above the framing lays the subfloor, typically a 3/4″ tongue and groove particle board, plywood or similar material. Above that there is a1/4″ plywood or cement board (moisture resistant) that s called the underlayment and may also have a sheet of roofing felt or similar material for added cushioning. Take extra caution when laying underlayment over the subflooring because the floor may crack if the seems match up so it’s best to stagger the seams.

Ceramic Tiles: Because this type of tiling has become popular in kitchens, bathrooms, halls and even living rooms for its durability and style, I want to devote this section on the subject.
Installing ceramic tiles in the bathroom will alter the height of fixtures like toilets, vanity sinks and cabinets as well as the door and adjoining room it is best to remove everything and start from scratch. This means removing the old underlayment as well. You have to create a level surface or the tiles will crack or break. Most ceramic floor tile is

To repair or replace? That is the question, particularly when it comes to your air-conditioning system.

Your AC System-Repair Or Replace?

To find the best Tarmac Waterford company, click here for Davitt Driveways Waterford.
To repair or replace? That is the question, particularly when it comes to your air-conditioning system. Since newer systems are more energy efficient, it sometimes makes more sense to replace a system rather than spend money on costly repairs. Industry averages suggest an air conditioner should last 12 to 15 years, as long as you have a qualified technician perform regular preventative maintenance and service.

When a system is young, it may be cost-effective to make simple repairs that can prolong the life of the system. However, replacing a system may be the best solution for the bigger problems that can result from an older system. In either case, comparing the price of repairs to replacement fees may help you decide what to do.

Consider Energy Costs

As you make your comparison, consider energy costs. Today’s new air-conditioning systems are as much as 60 percent more efficient than systems manufactured 10 years ago. So if you are concerned about utility bills and are faced with an expensive repair, you may want to look at the energy savings a new system offers.

The nature of the repair is also important. Repairs that require the replacement of system components may result in a mismatched system. Components that do not match can decrease system efficiency, compromise your comfort and shorten the lifespan of the compressor.

Two-Stage Cooling

Speaking of comfort, if repairs to an immediate problem will not address ongoing comfort issues, such as cold spots in your home, drafts, humidity issues or air quality concerns, it may be a good time to consider a new system. Today’s systems offer a variety of new features, including two-stage cooling, humidifiers and ultraviolet lights, that are designed to increase comfort and improve indoor air quality.

As you make the decision to repair or replace, rely on the exper-tise of a qualified contractor, who is licensed to maintain and service your system. If replacing your system seems appropriate, he or she can explain the importance of efficiency and sound ratings, load calculations, comfort features and warranties, as you select a new system.

When you’re ready to install a new system, consider the benefits of a new energy-efficient air conditioner or heat pump system such as the Acclimate™ Series from Luxaire Heating and Air Conditioning. Luxaire products are marketed by the Unitary Products Group of York, a Johnson Controls Company.

Knitting is a way to use needles to weave yarn together to make an object. Knitting is a great practical skill to have to make clothing or household items. It is also a very relaxing pastime. Knitting your own pieces can be very rewarding. It s fun to see your efforts come to fruition with a completed piece.

If you are interested in starting to knit, you first need to get some basic supplies and then need to learn to create basic stitches. You will need two knitting needles and some yarn in a color of your choosing. Knitting needles should be of medium size to start as it may be awkward to learn using small or oversized needles. Size 8 needles are good size to start with. Use a basic yarn for your first project. Although it s likely you will be tempted by all the very pretty and fancy yarns available, you need to start with a basic yarn so you can easily see your stitches. It will make learning much easier.

You will also need a pattern to create whatever you d like. It is advisable to start off with an easy project to learn the basics before moving on to something more complicated like knitting a sweater. My first knitting project was a dishcloth. To learn, you may want to read on the Internet or get some books with illustrations. Many community centers also offer classes for an inexpensive way to get introduced to knitting. I took a class at my local crafts store. The class was reasonable and I received a discount on supplies.

To start, make sure you have ample lighting. Stitching can be small so you do not want to strain your eyes. Remember that this is a relaxing art form. Hold the needles in a manner which is most comfortable to you. This may be awkward at first but you ll soon get the hang of it. You will then need to learn to cast on, which is the stitch to start knitting. Then, you will learn the knit stitch and purl stitch, the two basic stitches in knitting. Finally you will learn to bind off which is the way to complete your work.

When working with yarn, try starting from the inside out. This will help keep the yarn from rolling away from you. Stay organized while knitting. Using containers will help organize all your tools. As you accumulate different yarns, keep track of cleaning instructions. A good way to do that is to maintain a journal of the yarns with care instructions. As you complete a project, write it down next to the yarns used so you can easily refer to it. Knitting needles should be organized by size so they are easily accessible for each project. To organize yarns, use empty butter tubs with a hole in the middle. String the end piece through the hole and knit. This will keep the yarn separated and untangled.

Knitting is a highly relaxing form of art. As you continue to learn, you ll be able to accomplish many different types of work from clothing to blankets. Seeing the completed project that you worked so hard on can be a rewarding accomplishment. Start with easy patterns and increase in skill level as you become more comfortable. The most important part, though, is to have fun.

The first thing you want to start with is understanding the types of mini blinds and what the manufacturer recommends for cleaning, because you don’t want to hire someone that does a different kind of cleaning, that’s not recommended for your blinds.

Before you consider buying new mini blinds, you should consider cleaning the old ones. It’s a whole lot less money to clean them than it is to replace them. The process is simple. To clean white vinyl mini blinds, fill your bathtub 1/3 with water, mix in 1/2 cup of bleach. Soak the blinds in this for about 30 minutes, then rinse well. Hang them up outside to dry. Even the string comes clean as well as the blinds.

When it comes to spring-cleaning, mini blinds are among the most over-looked items in your home. When was the last time they got a good cleaning? Just make sure you read the manufacturer’s instructions so you don’t damage them.

If you purchased your mini blinds from K-Mart and it cost you fifteen dollars, obviously you’re not going to clean that type of product. But if you have a custom blind that cost $100 a window, you want to keep them looking like new. The cost of cleaning runs from about $14 up to $32 per shade or blind, depending on the kind you have.

QD What Kind Of Decking Material Do You Like? Get Composite Decking

Whatever your preferences in decking, composite decking can fill them. Composite decking is extremely versatile.

Decking material includes just about everything you can think of that could be used for a deck. Composite decking is a type of decking that is made from a combination of wood fibers or sawdust and plastic. If you prefer to use traditional lumber, 2 X 6 is the most common lumber used, but you can also get hardwood decking, such as Ipe, cedar and redwood. In the line of wood decking material, you can get #1 and #2. # 1 lumber is kiln-dried to help prevent warping, cupping and checking. #2 lumber is considered green or wet.

If you are not sure about the new composite decking material that you have heard so much about, just visit one of your local decking retailers to see what it looks like. You can also do a search online and do a comparison of composite decking material and the traditional wood for decking. You can also compare the manufacturers of this decking material to find the best product for your needs at the best price. Some of the popular manufacturers of composite decking include Trex, Choice Dek, Weatherbest, Eon, Ipe and GeoDeck.

The invention of composite decking material has reduced the amount of work that homeowners have with building and maintaining a deck around their homes. There are various types of decking material that will last for years and with which you have very low maintenance to keep it looking just as new as the day you installed it. When you do a comparison of composite decking materials, you will find that when you have a deck made of this material, the only work you will ever have to do with it is to hose it down for cleaning. No more painting, scraping or repairing rotten boards in the decking in the spring. Composite material is well able to withstand the elements of the weather.

A comparison of composite decking material also means you have to look at the prices of each brand. Some of the manufacturers have tile decking that just snaps together. Some of these tiles come in a hardwood pattern and by rotating them you can create an interesting decking design. All of the composite decking materials are colored through so there is very little if any fading. This decking material is also slip-resistant and the water drains through the mesh base.

Take a good look at the many types of decking material on the market when you want to install a new deck. Whether you choose to use composite decking material or not, you will have to build a wooden frame. All the instructions you need for installing the composite boards or tiles are included in the packages and you can easily complete a typical deck in a few hours. Why bother with decking material that you have to paint or stain, when you can use composite decking and then sit back and enjoy it?
