Laminate flooring mimics the look of traditional woods while offering easy installation and lasting durability. At first glance, it can be difficult to spot the difference between hardwoods and laminate flooring. What appears to be a natural wood grain pattern is really a thin layer of decor paper (a photographic image) under a tough-as-nails protective film that is glued and pressed to a high-density backing board. Laminate Flooring comes in an array of wood effects as well as stone and ceramic effects.

Laminate floorings main advantages are that it is easy to install, is very hardwearing and relatively inexpensive compared to real hardwood flooring.

Laminate flooring is a floating floor, which means it does not fasten directly to the sub-floor. Instead the planks are clicked together. This enables the floor to be fitted fast and with no real mess.

Most laminate floors today fit together with a click system with the most common being the UNICLIC system as used by Quick-Step. This is extremely easy and fast to fit. The ingenious UNICLIC-system has a special shape of tongue and groove. You simply place the tongue of one plank into the grove of another at an angle and press down. Their sophisticated and very accurate milled shape makes it possible to create a very tight connection during the installation. The floor can be walked on straight away.

If you are laying laminate flooring over a concrete sub-floor then you will fist need to lay down a damp proof membrane (DPM). This is basically a sheet of plastic usually around 5mm which helps protect the Laminate from moisture. On top of this goes the foam underlay this acts as sound absorption and also helps even out minor irregularities in the sub-floor.

Most manufactories now offer a combined DPM and underlay along with several underlay’s that have better sound absorbing qualities
Most of the leading laminate floor manufactories now also have ranges of flooring that also include built in underlay. This underlay is pre-fitted to the bottom of the flooring and is usually of sound absorbing quality. You do not need to install this type of floor a secondary but if you are laying over a concrete sub-floor you still have to lay down a D.P.M. (Damp Proof Membrane) first.

Laminate flooring has been around in Europe for around 15 years and has seen massive growth in the past few years. In 2004 over 750 million square meters of laminate flooring was sold worldwide this was an increase of 13% on the previous year. The biggest growth market is in the US with an impressive growth rate of 25%.

What is laminate Flooring Made From?
Laminate flooring is usually made up of four layers:

1. Overlay (Wear Layer)
The top wear layer is provided by the melamine resin, a highly wear resistant material that makes laminate flooring so hard wearing. This top layer is very similar to the top layer on counter or kitchen work tops but is usually around 40% stronger. This makes the laminate flooring highly resistant to scratches, burns, dent s, stains, etc.

2. DPL (Decorative Paper) or HPL (Decorative Paper + Add High Strength Paper)
It is the decorative paper which gives the laminate flooring its individual appearance, ranging from highly authentic wood reproduction, ceramic or stone designs. An important thing to look out for when purchasing laminate flooring is to understand the difference between DPL and HPL. We will talk about this latter

3. Core layer
This is made up of either high density fibreboard (H.D.F.). or medium density fibreboard (M.D.F.) This is saturated in resins to make it extremely hard. Most manufactures also add a moisture resistant resin to the core. This is important as it helps keep the flooring protected against moisture penetrating the boards.

4. Stabilizing layer
The bottom layer is the stabilizing layer; this is what gives the laminate floor its stability. It is made up of moisture resistant resins

How is Laminate Flooring Produced.

This is where DPL & HPL are different.

In the direct-pressure laminate process the decorative covering layer and stabilizing layer are pressed together onto the core layer.

While the high-pressure laminate process, on the other hand, the decorative paper and overlay are pressed onto special high-strength paper first. Only in a second stage is this so-called high-pressure laminate glued to the core layer. This makes the flooring a lot more tougher and more resistant to dents etc.

How is Laminate Flooring Graded
Apart from the different warrantees that manufactures offer and the difference between DPL & HPL the other thing to look out for when purchasing laminate flooring is industry standard load and traffic categories. These are broken into two different categories and are as follows.

Residential

Class 21 Moderate Loads. Ideal for bedrooms etc.

Class 22 Normal Loads, Ideal for living rooms etc.

Class 23 Heavy Loads. Ideal for anywhere in the house (except bathrooms)

Commercial

Class 31 – Moderate Loads. Hotel Rooms, meeting rooms, etc.

Class 32 Normal Loads. Offices, waiting rooms, etc.

Class 33 Heavy Loads. Large offices, shops, public buildings.

Laminate flooring is, basically, a euphemism for fake wood flooring

Laminate flooring is, basically, a euphemism for fake wood flooring. It is flooring that aims to avoid all the pitfalls of carpet and give the advantages of wood floor, while at the same time avoiding the excessive expense of real wood floors. Laminate flooring is generally made from man-made materials, most often plastic or fibreboard.

That s not to say that laminate flooring doesn t have its upsides, however. Because it s so cheap, it lends itself to do-it-yourself projects, and can be very quick and easy to install if it is fitted with an interlocking click system such as Uniclic. It doesn t need to be stuck down to the floor underneath, which makes it both easy to put in and easy to remove if you ever need to. It won t fade in sunlight like wood will. Good laminate flooring can be very difficult to tell from wood at all, while often being more durable and easier to replace should anything happen to it.

Another advantage of laminate flooring is that you re not just limited to fake wood patterns: you can also get stone, tiles, or bright colours or other interesting patterns you simply have much more choice than you do with wood. The worldwide market for laminate flooring is growing much faster than that of wood, mainly for reasons of cost.

When you choose laminate flooring, it is important to get the right kind of flooring for your room. Living rooms need floors that can take quite a lot of weight, while bathroom floors need to be water-resistant (although even the most water-resistant laminates don t do well if they consistently get wet).

One other downside of laminate flooring is that it tends to make a tell-tale tap-tPDD1 sound when it s walked on, compared to quiet wood floors. You can get underlay that will go some way towards getting rid of this sound, but it s an extra expense and extra trouble to install.

Laminate floors are placed over the sub-floor without actually being attached to it. In other words, laminate flooring simply lies on whatever s underneath it (wood, cement, linoleum, etc.). Laminate floors come in squares or planks, and have a variety of shapes and sizes The planks have a tongue and groove edge which are locked together.

Many laminate floors don t require any glue, making installation much easier with their glueless locking systems. Other laminate floors have glue pre-applied, requiring just a damp sponges to activate the adhesive. Many of the better grade laminate floors have their edges pre-sealed at the factory in order to prevent moisture from attacking the inner core structure.

Prior to installation, a special polyurethane coat is put down, over which the flooring will float. Some higher-priced underlayments reduce sound and restrict moisture penetration. The installation for laminate wood flooring is similar to hardwood, with several rows laid first to square off the room to prevent bowing and cupping of the planks.

The process of glueless laminate floor installation

The laminate flooring most commonly offered by manufacturers are glueless, also referred to as “clic-floors.” The tongue and the groove of this type of flooring is meant to lock firmly in place and not come apart with foot traffic. Always read the manufacturer s installation procedures before you start this will prevent you from making mistakes and wasting time and effort. Also, the subfloor must be flat in order for the planks to lock together.

Tools to install glued laminate flooring

You’ll need various tools to install standard laminate flooring. Again, be sure to follow the manufacturer s installation instructions and use the recommended tools.

Glue most, but not all, laminate floors have a special adhesive to join the planks and help keep moisture out of the core.

Straps these are much more effective at pulling rows of planks together than clamps are. As a rule, you’ll need a set of straps for every four feet of starter rows.

Fillers and sealants — some laminate wood flooring manufacturers offer color coordinated fillers and sealants to cover gaps between planks and prevent moisture from entering the perimeter of the planks.

Tapping block use this to tPDD1 two planks together.

Wedges V-shaped wedges are used to ensure that there’s as little gPDD1 left between the laminate floor and the walls as possible. Again, different manufacturers of laminate floors have their own recommended gPDD1 distance, so to be sure to consult your manufacturer s installation manual.

Pulling bar this bar is used to pull two pieces of together. Great care must be applied in using the bars to avoid chipping the surface of the plank.

We all know that do it yourself projects can be fun so it s easy to forget that you need to take safety precautions at all times. So, here are some important safety tips to help keep you safe during your next home improvement project when using your Little Giant Ladder.

1. Read all warning labels and instructions before use.

2. Use the right ladder for the right job.

3. Respect gravity. Falling hurts so position your belt buckle between the side rails at all times. Make certain the area at the top and bottom of the ladder are clear of debris.

4. Keep the ladder slip free. Ladders are used for many different projects, so make sure it doesn t have any oil, paint, grease or other hazards on the rungs and feet. And always keep your ladder dry and clean.

5. Lock it in place! To keep the ladder stable and to prevent it from folding, make sure any hinges or joints are securely locked before you step on.

6. Inspect the ladder before use. Before each use inspect the ladder for broken locks or rungs. Check to see if it is damaged or broken in any way.

7. Always face your ladder. To help prevent a falling accident, face the ladder when both ascending and descending. Never climb with your back towards the ladder.

8. Wear rubber soled shoes. When doing electrical work or when working outside, wear shoes with rubber soles to keep you grounded. Rubber soles can help keep a better grip on the ladder.

9. Stay away from the top two rungs. Because you can become very unstable when standing on the top two rungs, staying below the third rung when possible to help you keep your balance.

10. Use your ladder properly at all times. Avoid applying more weight than recommended, deviating from recommended use and make sure it s long enough so you never tie two separate ladders together.

11. Keep your balance. While on the ladder, lean against it and keep your hips between the rails. Always hold onto the ladder with at least one hand.

12. Be sure to stabilize the ladder. When in the extended position, the top of the ladder should be placed firmly against the space you are working on. When working on a roof, be sure the ladder extends at least 3 past the roofline. Place the bottom on a sturdy, even surface and stand on the first rung to check stability before ascending the ladder.

Using these safety tips will help keep you safe as you work on your next home improvement project.

To know your air conditioner better, start from the basics. There are mainly three major parts of an air conditioner the condenser, the compressor and the evaporator. While the first two are placed exterior to the air conditioner, the evaporator is interior to the machine.

Basically the air conditioner works on the successive heating and cooling of a super-volatile liquid called Freon. The latter first goes into the compressor and is compressed into gas form, thus emitting heat and cooling the liquid consequently. The dispelled heat is, then, fanned out with the help of a rotating fan. Next, the liquid gets into the condenser and absorbs the surrounding heat to transform into vapor again. So evidently, the surroundings cool down. This whole process goes on in a cyclical pattern, thus bringing down the temperature in the room.

Apart from the three above major parts of an air conditioner, the machine also has a hot coil, a cool coil, one exterior fan, one interior fan and a control circuit in it. The hot coil is placed outside to dispel the heat out and the cool coil placed inside to absorb heat. The control circuit modifies the temperature by regulating the rotation speed of the fans with the help of a potentiometer.

Of all its components, the compressor remains the most valuable and costly part of an air conditioner. So the air conditioner manufacturers always provide a warranty on the compressor. A compressor of superior make and quality has a long life and functions fine over years. And if the original compressor gives trouble, it can be substituted with a new one. It s simple to buy a brand new compressor and fit in your old air conditioner. However, here, it is always advisable to go for the compressor of the same brand as that of the rest of the machine. But the problem is only a handful of companies make their own compressors. All the others just buy from them and fix it in their air conditioning units.

The evaporator and condenser in an air conditioner can be replaced too. So can be the coils, in case they wear out. Any problematic coil can lead to defective heat-dissipation and result in a major malfunctioning thereafter. The two fans are the simplest of air conditioner parts that can be easily replaced, precisely because they are fixed with screws on the outside and with wires inside into the air conditioner circuit board.

The outmost cover of the air conditioning unit is the final component in it. But this has no complicated function; it s just there to add a nice finishing touch to the look and feel of the machine. Usually these come in molded plastic materials and are available in various colors and designs. Same holds true for the buttons and knobs in the air conditioner. They just make it look good. Now, if your air conditioner faces the road out, it s important to fit a water-carrying pipe to it.

Evaporative coolers are a better option when compared to the costly air conditioners. Since the evaporative coolers are chePDD1 in their prices, possess high-tech systems and are quite reliable, so people prefer to use them. Portable and small in size, the air coolers keep your home and office truly cool spreading fresh and healthy air throughout the space. Evaporative cooler prices vary from cooler to cooler because each of the coolers has its own set of features and benefits. These outstanding features that differentiate them from one another include the speed fans, washable filters, and anti-bacterial water tank.

The evaporative coolers range in prices due to their different features that are sometimes common in each of the air coolers. If the air coolers have features like fans, remote control operating system, heater systems, and follow humidifier methods, then the prices of those evaporative coolers range from $64.89 to $114.99. These air coolers usually work with 60 to 200 watts of power and reduce the air temperature in the surrounding space to a considerable extent.

Different Types And Their Different Prices

The prices of the evaporative coolers also vary for the different types of the air coolers. The portable air coolers that can be moved from one place to another are quite durable and reliable. They cost lesser as compared to the air-conditioners that usually have exorbitant prices. The regular prices of these evaporative coolers are approximately $139.99 and the sale price of the coolers is $109.99. The evaporative air coolers that contain ionizers have their prices ranging from $129.99 to $149.99. The sale prices of these air coolers, however, range from being $89 to $99. These air coolers are truly advantageous, as the prices remain low yet they offer the highest cooling ambience to the entire space around.

Variation In Prices Due To The Size And Capacity Of The Air Coolers

The prices of the evaporative coolers also differ due to the size and capacity of the air coolers. If the coolers have a fan, humidifier and ionic air purifier system operated by a remote control then the prices range from being $100 to $120. The air coolers capable of cooling huge areas like 200 square feet range in prices from being $70 to $120. These coolers work great in dry conditions under 50 % humidity level.

The evaporative cooler prices also depend upon the brands of the coolers. So while the Fujitronic portable coolers range in prices from being $90 to $129, the hi-cool evaporative air coolers range from being $250 to $400. The slant/fin air-cooling system uses water evaporation systems to cool the air much more than the fan. So these air coolers range in prices from $93.49 to $103.49. The portable air coolers that can be operated with the remote controls can range in prices $229 to $250. So if you need an evaporative cooler that is portable, powerful, energy-efficient and considerable prices, then you should compare the prices and then opt for the air-cooler that will best suit your purposes. You should make a thorough survey of the online prices to get an air cooler that will be just suitable for the area space of your home or office and come in useful package within your budget.

There are a number of reasons why you should go for central air conditioning. If you are intending to find a way of conditioning the air in a large establishment, like say a building or a big house, central air conditioning is one of the best, if not the only, options you have. The AC system in this case utilizes a split system for condensation and compression. Its evaporator is connected to an air handing mechanism (forced air furnace). The entire machine is packed together as a large unit and put outside the establishment, usually on the roof or an outhouse.

The cool air circulated by the unit is transmitted through the length and the breadth of building. In case you want to alter the temperature you might use the controls provided to each dweller of the establishment. But such controls are not common and many systems come without these making it imperative for all the tenants of the specific house to bear with the general temperature set for the house.

Since the AC system is placed outside the building therefore it does not bother people living in the building with the disturbing humming sound most AC s make. A superior cleansing system also purifies the air it circulates so that the air you breathe is freed of any irritating allergen, dust particle or other unwanted substance.

Centralizing your AC unit also helps the administrators, engineers or maintenance people of the building to keep a strict check on the electric consumption and voltage requirements of the people in the building, since it leaves no reason for the tenants to run their personal AC units.

Centralized AC also gives you the opportunity to find out and decide the temperature you want, this in turn helps you control your electric bills, since, the more consistent the temperature is the greater control you have over your energy expenses.

An AC s filtering capacity is a feature you need to pay good attention to while purchasing. Your AC needs to make sure the air you breathe is clean, along with making it cool. In case it fails to do so it will be transmitting pollutants everywhere in the building.

For greater convenience you should probably try and install some means of controlling the temperature of the AC unit from each of your tenants apartments. Consult an architect as to how you might do this.

Are you one of the many homeowners who have decided to remodel your own kitchen? Although there are a number of advantages to hiring the services of a professional contractor, for kitchen remodeling projects, there are also a number of disadvantages, namely the cost of doing so.

Therefore, if you are looking to have your kitchen remodeled, there is a good chance that will be doing the remodeling yourself. Unfortunately, depending on the type of kitchen remodeling that is being done, it can be quite difficult. There is always a possibility that something could go wrong.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling and something unexpected, the most unexpected thing is a mistake. Honestly, sometimes even professional contractors make mistakes; therefore, there is a good chance that you may, especially if you do not have any home improvement experience. Luckily, most mistakes can be fixed. If you are remodeling your kitchen and you make a mistake, it is best to take a minute and look at the situation. Doing so may make it easier for you to come up with a solution to your problem. For instance, if you were retiling your kitchen floor and you accidentally cut a floor tile too small, you may want to think about purchasing a replacement floor tile and so on. When you take a minute to assess the situation, you will find it easier to come up with a solution to your problem.

In addition to remodeling mistakes, another problem that often arises with kitchen remodeling is injuries. Whether you are retiling your kitchen floor, replacing the light fixtures in your kitchen, or redoing your kitchen walls, you may be putting yourself at risk for injury. The best way to avoid injury is to familiarize yourself with your surroundings, the materials that you are using, as well as your tools. Should an injury still occur, you need to take action right away. If you simply get a cut that needs to be bandaged, take a few minutes to do so, especially if you are bleeding. You will not want to get blood on your newly remodeled kitchen. If a serious injury should occur, such as cut that may need stitches, you are advised to get it taken care of. Visiting your doctor or the emergency room is the best. Although you may not want to stop remodeling your kitchen, it can wait; you will not want to put yourself at anymore risk

Although most kitchen remodeling problems can be fixed, you may find it difficult to do so or you may not longer want to do so. The good thing about kitchen remodeling is that there are an unlimited number of individuals in the United States who can be considered remodeling experts. Even if you already started remodeling your kitchen and you stopped, whether it was because you got injured or you were making too many mistakes, you could still seek professional assistance.

In most cases, you will find that it is never too late to call upon a professional. Therefore, if, at any point in time, you think that you are way in over your head, it may be a good idea to request the services of a professional kitchen remodeling expert. You can easily find one of these experts, also commonly referred to as contractors, by using the internet or your local phone book.

For a woman if cuisine is the door to a man s heart, kitchen is where you have that door. Kitchen is no more the rustic workplace where women and housewives panted for several hours while they prepared meals.

Kitchen used to be a segregated room, which now is an integral part of home with almost no physical separation. It is much brighter, wider and smarter than ever before and a place where members of the family would let their creative juices. So, welcome to the exciting world of decorated new age kitchen.

Decorating Your Kitchen to Your Taste
Kitchen is where you want to decorate most after your living room. Sitting in your living room you can see the kitchen, perhaps this could be another reason for decorating it, if you forget the duration you spend there.

Carefully decorated kitchen blends with the ambience of the home. Two things help give this feel to kitchen: the no-wall connection with the living room and the d cor of it. If yours is a constructed home, choose a brighter color (distemper) for kitchen; for a brighter kitchen lightens up the mood and appears wide.

Get the cabinets done up in plywood in its original splendor above dado but with softer look. Same pattern goes well on the lower row below the platform. Make sure you don t leave corners uncabineted from both aesthetic and hygiene point of view. Mind you, the bottom line of upper cabinets must be well above your full standing height.

Standard height for dado is 2R above the platform, but there is no reason why it should be so. Take it as high as to touch the bottom of upper cabinets. This avoids the unpleasant strip of blank space between them. Next, the dado must match both upper and lower cabinets in d cor. If you chose plywood for cabinets, stainless steel in mat finish would look great. While mat finish is pleasant on eyes, steel good for hygiene. Other option is ceramic tiles.

Plan crockery showcase near dining table to avoid the odd look if made in glass panes. This also adds to convenience and doesn t clutter the main kitchen area.

You must have the chimney concealed within the cabinet if the cooking spot is along a wall. A hanging chimney goes well too, provided it is encased. The best places for faucet and sink are close to the stove and along the exterior wall.

If the sink is on your left, have the fridge and oven on the right, purely for convenience sake. It gives a neat look without cluttering the space.

Decorating kitchen is an endless saga. And immediately you are on a mission to maintain it.

Kitchen sinks, what do we know about them? We use and abuse them and they’re probably the most used plumbing fixture in your home. We know a garbage disposer usually hangs off of it into the cabinet. Other than that, it just sits in your kitchen ready to perform the duties assigned no matter how dirty of disgusting. After years of duty however, it becomes time to just retire the sink and get another one. Problem is that there are many materials you can choose from and how do you know what one is right for you? The answer of course is to understand what is important to you and how each of the kitchen sink materials stack up against your needs.

It’s no secret that we’re all short on time and having someone else do anything for you in your home is expensive. The point is that time is expensive no matter if it’s yours or you hire someone. With that in mind, remember that if you need to replace your sink every year or two because you bought cheap, the expense is in the labor.

The cheapest sinks today are stainless steel and pressed steel. The lower cost stainless and the pressed steel are also known as “apartment” grade. They call them this because apartment owners, looking for the cheapest prices tend to use these products. If you’re on a budget and your family are not heavy users of the kitchen sink, these may be an attractive alternative to more expensive materials. Be aware though that the pressed steel sink typically has a painted surface that scratches and chips easily. These sinks will tend to look old and outdated quickly due to the finish used. The stainless also scratches easily but if cared for correctly, it will continue to look acceptable. Cheaper stainless steel sinks tend to be made of thinner material which means that water being ran into them and the garbage disposal will sound a lot louder on these less expensive models. These sinks come in rimless and top mounted models.

A definite upgrade to these products is the cast iron kitchen sink. These sinks are made of casted metal them finished with a porcelain material giving them a deep and beautiful glow. The finish is long wearing and with a little occasional waxing, can look great for years. They come in a variety of colors and can be ordered in undercounter mounting or top mounting styles. These kitchen sinks however are heavy and much more difficult to install so unless you are extremely handy and have experience with these sinks, you will need an expert for installation.

Another sink material that seems to be gaining in popularity is the solid surface type material These are a durable material formed into a kitchen sink and tend to be more of a matte finish. This type of sink material goes especially well with more natural finishes in your kitchen. Although not as popular as cast-iron, these composite kitchen sinks are rapidly gaining a strong following.

Your kitchen sink is a well used piece of plumbing that deserves to be constructed of quality materials. Buying only on price will cause additional expense due to having to replace the unit much more often. So the best solution is to buy quality and have your Uncle Charlie install it for you.
