For guys, there is a difference between shaving and trimming. Keeping everything neat and tidy is one thing, but there is no compelling health reason to shave them.

As for women, keeping them shaved is more of a cultural thing: desirable in some and ignored in others (France, anyone?).

I always shave my armpits although there isn’t much to shave.

    Do you?

    I noticed you haven’t voted yourself :D

Just thinking about the photo of julia roberts

I agree with Dave. It’s not trimming for men and not shaving. There is a difference.

I’m in the process of laser for my armpits…and legs!

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 Iman Posted December 15th, 2007 - 8:27 pm

I meant to say It IS trimming for men and NOT shaving!

  5. Gravatar Icon 5 Iman Posted December 15th, 2007 - 8:28 pm

see what you’ve done? you forced me to use armpits… I prefer using under arms :P

  6. Gravatar Icon 6 asoom Posted December 15th, 2007 - 8:35 pm

I’m thinking this one was probably meant for guys but I actually don’t shave my armpits because the hair lasered off like a while ago

  7. Gravatar Icon 7 Iman Posted December 15th, 2007 - 11:10 pm

Asoom, did you get laser on your legs too? if so, how do you like the results?

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 Stephen Posted December 16th, 2007 - 1:11 am

    Should guys shave their armpits?

  9. Gravatar Icon 9 Shaden Posted December 16th, 2007 - 4:26 pm

Dave, but isn’t it easier to shave every now and then than keep it all tidy and clean? not to mention the odor caused by hair, regardless trimmed or not. And yea, French women don’t shave, ewwwwwww :P
tedek, I voted, I always do.

Stephen, I think they should every now and then.

    Iman, armpits armpits armpits :D

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 Shaden Posted December 16th, 2007 - 4:33 pm

assoom, no its for men and women

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 Dave Posted December 16th, 2007 - 4:37 pm

Shaden, here’s my answer…and you may know more about me than you would like after this:

I don’t think it’s necessary to shave in order to keep armpit hair clean. After all, I don’t shave my head to keep things clean; I just wash it with shampoo. And I do the same with the hair under my arms. Some occasional trimming, select shaving and daily washing generally keeps things looking (and smelling) nice and yet remain masculine.

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 Shaden Posted December 16th, 2007 - 4:45 pm

Dave, I understand! I have nothing against those who trim, and honestly I don’t care if someone shaves occasionally or regularly or just trim, or even never shaves as long as he is not harming those around him with a bad smell. But I don’t think shaving makes a man less masculine, I mean we’re talking about underarms here.

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 Moey Posted December 18th, 2007 - 12:49 am

    I shave :P

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 M Posted December 19th, 2007 - 3:54 am

Shave every now and then ..doing laser so i can’t wax because it will mess up my follicle’s cycles

Let’s take it south …do you shave there ?

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 Hani Obaid Posted December 19th, 2007 - 9:45 pm

I’m glad you made it into a poll, and that the destroyers of armpit hair have won !

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 asoom Posted December 22nd, 2007 - 12:38 am

Iman, no I didn’t do the legs, too expensive and not necessary since the hair there is fine and shaving does the job. The results for the underarms are great, totally worth it!

What a sad culture we live in that people are judged by whether or not they have body hair. Who are we really trying to please? Maybe we can influence the fashion industry to sell us sexy clothes that do not need to be so revealing! Wonder why men’s fashion designers never have invented sleeveless sport jackets to use at a formal events, but almost all the women are in sleeveless gowns.

  18. Gravatar Icon 18 Natural Girl Posted May 8th, 2008 - 9:30 am

I am a woman, and I do not shave my armpits. Why? Because
    1. It hurts to shave: There are too many nooks and crannies under the arms, and the skin is very delicate.
    2. Shaving does not make me feel good. In fact, it hurts when deodorant gets in the broken skin.
    3. Anybody who shaves her armpits so that others won’t think she’s gross is oppressed by them. For those who shave them for their own comfort, I don’t understand how it doesn’t hurt you, but kudos to you for doing what makes YOU feel good.
    4. Anybody who thinks that girls who don’t shave are gross is not a friend of mine: Womanly pit hair is like a shallow-person-repellent.
    5. In the mainstream American society, guys do not have to shave their armpits or even their faces to be sexy, so women shouldn’t have to shave either.

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 Natural Girl Posted May 8th, 2008 - 9:30 am

    6. I think that women with unshaven under arms are more attractive.
    7. Hair does not make your armpits smell unless you don’t shower. The sweat’s gonna go somewhere: either your shirt or your armpit hair, unless you use antiperspirants, which is addressed in the next section.
    8. This one has nothing to do with pit hair, but does have to do with armpits. A lot of you probably use the mainstream antiperspirant/deodorants, and you probably think that your armpit smell is just awful when you don’t use them, and it’s true. I think the antiperspirants just trap your sweat inside, and when it comes out it’s extra potent. Whatever antiperspirants do, they upset the balance of your armpit just like washing your face with too harsh a soap upsets its balance. I quit using antiperspirants and switched to a more natural deodorant. After about a week of stinking, my sweat quit smelling as strong, and my friends and I have found one’s natural odor is kind of nice when it first comes out (not after days of not showering of course). You’ve just gotta find a deodorant that compliments it nicely (or not: on some occasions the pure human smell is good). I guess that may confuse some people, but really I only care about people who embrace their natural scents instead of trying to hide them.
    9. Shaven armpits are what’s wrong with mainstream America: you’re like a bunch of sheared sheep, just following along.
    10. Somebody’s gotta stand up for women’s right not to shave and the beauty of it!

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 Zippie Posted May 24th, 2008 - 8:41 am

I’m a woman and I don’t shave. I love my body hair. I have 5 kids and I don’t shave, and still men seem to find me quite attractive. My husband is not bothered by it either. I feel good that I am setting this example for my children, and the one time I did shave I felt ashamed for them to see my legs and underarms, so I covered them up. I just feel so much sexier and more feminine unshaven. Must be the pheromones!!

im a young woman and im wondering a lot about weither i should shave or not so im looking into websites to have more informations about what women think about it. I do agree with everything naturel girl have said and i admire all the women who does it, because it is so much more easier to fall into what the society tells you to do. I’m quite desapointing with myself not being able to just definatly quit shaving. I guess its to much into my culture and im just scare. But im trying slowly to change my old habbits. I’m slowly starting to understand why i think this cleaner and more attractive to look at. For me, and im not saying this is for all women, but i know that for me, i only shave because the society wants me to do it. I’m 18. I started shaving when i was like 13. But now i slowly start to understand more why i am doing it. This is absulutly not for me , im not living in a free society. I dont really have a choose (even tho i do)

Im really glad theres women in this world who stand up for things like that to show younger people the right exemple. Im not saying nobody should shave. Im saying everybody should have a choice weither to do it or not and no one should make fun of them for that.
Honnesly, I think that hair are quite attractive. If you think hair are gross and discusting just think first if you really think this or you think it because this is what you ‘’should” think.

I am 12 years old and I am a girl
and I get armpit hair already! Since I am so young I am very scared about what others think. So I am self conscience. After I shave it
leaves a dark mark in my armpit. Since I am only 12 I don’t want laser! Plus I can’t drive to walmart and buy some cream because I can’t drive, and my Mom doesn’t even know! What should I do?!

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 KAD Posted July 2nd, 2008 - 1:01 am

Good for you Natural Girl! I’m so sick of anal-retentive people who want to erase all semblances of humanity. They’re the same type of people who actually take the time and energy to sculpt their friggin’ pubes, or shave them altogether! Geez! Too much time on their hands! I am tremendously attracted to women who do not shave or use perfumes or deodorants. I like them to bathe regularly - every couple days or so - but the ones who are so worried about looking or smelling like adult women are of no interest to me, whatsoever. To each his/her own, though….

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 Lisa Posted July 16th, 2008 - 2:51 am

    Hey there Kad,

I don’t shave my armpits or wear deodorant. Just don’t like all the chemicals in it! :) It is natural to sweat. Want to know more write back! :)

    Hey Chelsea!

Most of your classmates at that age, sad to say, are probably idiots. Or, at best, they’re uninformed. They probably have parents who didn’t mention to them that body hair growth at puberty on both sexes is not only normal, but should be expected.

I know that doesn’t help you a great deal, but really, you’re better than those that may laugh at you if you do let your underarm hair grow.

  26. Gravatar Icon 26 Andy Posted July 16th, 2008 - 12:11 pm

    As for me:

I don’t shave because I refuse to be brainwashed. Bad enough that many women have been brainwashed into thinking shaving is mandatory (and along with them, most guys into agreeing). But now a recent trend is encouraging us guys to touch our hair under there as well? Uh, forget that.

Now if you genuinely feel better shaving and being clean-shaven, good for you. Do what makes you feel good. Me? I can barely stand shaving my face (although I do … sometimes), much less a more sensitive region, and I’m really NOT inclined to believe that most women who shave their underarms are comfortable with it, considering that the skin there is far more sensitive than a man’s face.

Ideally, I wouldn’t care one way or the other whether a woman shaves or not, but realistically, I’m a lot more attracted to women who don’t shave. I can’t really put my finger on any one reason why, either. Maybe not shaving is so uncommon in America (and even worse, becoming less common in Europe) that it’s taken on an exotic quality? Eh. All I know is that its very pleasing to the eye and, in my own opinion, she just looks like a REAL woman.

Well, I suppose there’s another reason I’m so attracted to unshaven women: they just seem to give off a whole different level of confidence, which is extremely attractive.

And yeah, I’m not a fan of deodorant, either. Washing at least every other day is important, of course, but normal, natural body odor towards the end of the day after starting it off clean? Yes, please.

Hi Lisa! I’ve been away on vacation and just saw your reply. Glad to hear from you and glad you agree that natural is best. I’d love to talk to you more, but some place a bit more private, if possible. ;-)

Sweat doesn’t cause the armpit to stink.

I’m sure if you’re around skunks long enough they’d stop smelling too.

Hey Natural Girl… I’m a guy and I just bet we’d look really interesting as a couple since you don’t shave and I don’t either. I’ve been self conscious most of my life for the fact that my pits are bald. I mean notta’ single hair except for a few fine blondies that you’d have to actually look for and they can only be seen in just the right sunlight. When I’m with my girlfriend and wearing a muscle shirt/wife beater, I’m not at all self conscious to raise my arms in public. She loves the look and actually a bit jealous at times since she shaves hers but they still don’t look as good, according to her. I’m not the least bit squeamish around friends and family, but just strangers.

I’ve grown out of the bald pit feelings somewhat over the years and have met a few more, male and female, that also have hairless pits and aren’t self conscious about it at all. Just keep in mind, there are a few of us around. My only question to you is, would you even consider dating someone like me, and if so, wouldn’t we look a little bit odd together?

  30. Gravatar Icon 30 The Opinion of the Common Human Posted September 24th, 2008 - 10:47 pm

Just a friendly reminder for you women-folk who don’t shave: You’re vile, disgusting and shunned by society, and you should all be ashamed of yourselves. Disgusting wretches.

  31. Gravatar Icon 31 An American in France Posted October 29th, 2008 - 4:35 am

I’m female and I shave my under arms. Living in France, I’ve noticed that pretty much everyone else here does too. I haven’t a clue where that stereotype came from. Non-shaven under arms itches anyway, although, if I weren’t to shave in a long time I’d probably get used to it.

In India armpit shaving was common during the period the South Indian Temples were built. Then this habit disappeared due to augment of sleeved blouses-by the way,I am neither a historian or a researcher. Now women in South India keep their pits very private with long sleeved blouses. I think women look good if they wear sleeveless clothes and keep pits smooth. In Bollywood movies they look abs sexy with exposed smooth pits. In the North many women go sleeveless. Going sleeveless I think is practical in hot and humid weather.
