Petition to Restrict the Sale and Use of Cluster Bombs

30Mar07

Just Foreign Policy together with Jewish Voice for Peace are planning to deliver to the US Senate - particularly the Democratic presidential candidates - a petition against cluster bombs.

Millions of unexploded cluster “bomblets” were left scattered over southern Lebanon after Israel withdrew last summer. Lebanese civilians, particularly children, have been killed and maimed by these weapons, many of which were sold or given to Israel by the United States. Such civilian suffering is a hallmark of cluster bombs. Since so many fail to explode upon impact, Handicap International estimates that 98 percent of their casualties are civilians.

There is legislation in the US Senate that would restrict the use of cluster bombs by the United States. It unfortunately stops short of an outright ban, but it is a major step in the right direction. It would prohibit the United States from using, for example in Iraq, most of the cluster munitions in its stockpile.

Please sign the petition here and don’t be shy to re-blog this and spread the word, this is the least we can do. Several hundred more signatures are needed before the petition is ready to be delivered next week
