My First Municipal Elections

30Jul07

Tomorrow was declared a national holiday so that Jordanians will be able to go out and elect their favorite candidates.

This is my first municipal elections (actually my first elections, period), and although I don’t understand why do we need to take an entire day off inorder to vote I have welcomed the unexpected holiday with a big smile. Any kind of holiday, well, almost any, is very welcomed. Even though it’s a bit problematic to me personally, since I’m sort of broke and the holiday will prolong my miserable financial status a couple of days more, but regardless, as a Jordanian citizen I just love holidays. Can’t pretend otherwise.

Back to elections. I’m sorry to say that I’m not going to vote for anyone because of one reason; I don’t know any of the candidates nor what they stand for. This is not a result of being naive, ignorant and out of the loop nor because none of my relatives is running for a position, although at least one of the previously mentioned reasons is true. It’s because as an average Jordanian citizen, all I’ve been seeing is big passport-like pictures on big ugly posters with the names of the candidates below or above them, and a request to vote for these candidates. Aside from littering the streets with these posters and distorting the already not so pretty walls and poles everywhere, no one bothered to tell me why I should vote for him.

Not to mention that I don’t know anyone who has any idea who’s running for what nor what their agendas are. As a matter of fact, a sad fact may I add, the few I talked to about the elections are not planning to vote and seem to be convinced that its useless.

As for my vote, an ipod can easily solve my problem (just kidding, well, half kidding)

If you think you have enough information about the candidates, please go out and vote. For more information about the elections and where to vote, click here.

      Omar, lol :D
Yugi, I honestly was looking forward to the elections but this is not how I pictured it. Maybe next year will be different, or I’ll have more insight.

I’m glad people like you could make up their mind about someone and go vote for him/her.
